ALBEROBELLO

In the heart of the Murgia, 50 kilometers (31 miles) from Bari, a nice spread of pinnacles announces the historical center of Alberobello, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The old town, which was also awarded the Touring Club Orange Flag of Italy, is entirely composed of trulli, traditional bleached dry huts with lime and covered with conical roofs of bare stone. Crosses, the pierced heart, and zodiac signs decorate the roofs, keeping the air of mystery surrounding the trulli.
Rione Monti, a maze of narrow winding streets with over 1,000 trulli, is the oldest part of the city, along with Rione Aia Piccola. This area is home to the Casa Pezzolla, a complex of 15 trulli interconnected that now houses the Museum of the Territory, and the Sovereign Trullo, which stages performances and concerts.
The Alberobello churches are also shaped trulli. The Church of St. Anthony has a Greek cross plan and a dome 21 meters high (69 feet). Another church that is worth visiting is the Minor Basilica Santi Medici, where you'll find images of the Madonna of Loreto and patron saints Cosmas and Damian.
